One of the most recognizable silhouettes in the night sky: a dark cloud of dust and gas rearing up like a horse's head against the glowing red curtain of ionized hydrogen behind it. The Horsehead sits about 1,500 light-years away in Orion, near the Flame Nebula — a stellar nursery where new stars are being born inside the very clouds you see here. This is starlight blocked, not starlight shining: the "horse" is visible only because of what it hides.
