Every photon in this image left its source 2.5 million years ago — before humans existed. Andromeda is our nearest large galactic neighbor, a spiral of a trillion stars more than twice the width of the Milky Way, and it is falling toward us: in about 4.5 billion years our two galaxies will merge. Until then, it remains the most distant object visible to the naked eye — and this is what it looks like through a backyard telescope.
